New construction in Austin, San Antonio, and the Hill Country that is worth documenting. Spec homes on the market, spec homes not yet listed, and completed or nearly completed custom homes. A custom home does not need to be for sale.
We look at the whole house: the design, the products and brands, the systems inside it, and the builder and specialty companies behind the work. We feature homes where the choices, taken as a whole, are worth talking about.
The most expensive house doesn't win. Neither does the biggest appliance package or the most dramatic design. We're looking for quality across the house, not perfection in one category.
A well-designed home.
Care in the systems: insulation, weather barrier, HVAC, water, electrical, and the other decisions that affect how the house actually works.
Good product choices, not just the appliances, but the windows, flooring, cabinetry, fixtures, equipment, and materials throughout.
And the people behind it. The builder, the architect or designer, and the specialty companies whose work shows: the cabinet maker, the pool builder, the HVAC contractor, the window and door supplier.
Start with a short submission: basic information about the home, the team behind it, a few photos if you have them, and what you think makes it worth seeing. Five minutes.
If it looks like a fit, we'll follow up for the detailed spec sheet: windows, cabinetry, appliances, fixtures, systems, materials, and the companies you'd like credited for their work. The more we know about what went into the home, the better we can tell its story.
We review every submission. If a home is a fit, we schedule a walk-through, confirm what's on the sheet, and produce the feature: a written article, a video walkthrough, and a detailed record of the products, systems, materials, and companies behind the house. Most homes we look at are not selected.
For custom homes, the feature runs with the homeowner's consent. The home can be identified by neighborhood only, with the address and the owner's name withheld. Construction cost is published only if the owner chooses to share it, as an exact figure, a range, or not at all.
Features are selected, not sold. There is no fee, and coverage cannot be purchased. We name what's in the house and give our view of it without calling anything better than it is.
